We're trying to take the pulse of small business in South Africa and the results will be here

We've been talking to small business owners since 1993. There a lot of us, and the government keeps telling us how critical we are to the future of South Africa.

The challenge they face is that it's almost impossible to get inside the mind of an entrepreneur when you hold permanent employment - which the relevant government employees do.

The result is that they have no clue about what drives us, what scares us, and what motivates us. Nor do they know how many of us are going out of business right now. We're like the Golden Toad - invisible. (That's a bad analogy, I guess, because no Golden Toad has been seen since 1989. I have seen a few small business owners lately, although not nearly as many as I would hope.)
